WWII in Europe had only ended a few months earlier when Overseas Airlines introduced the first commercial North Atlantic DC-4 service. Another first took place on March 7, 1946 when American Airlines introduced U.S. DC-4 domestic service between New York and Los Angeles. During the late 1940s and early 1950s the DC-4 and converted C-54s carried more passengers than any other four-engine transport. Amazingly many of these aircraft are still operating more than 60 years after they were first manufactured.
On December 23, 1944 one of the 155 Douglas aircraft built in Chicago was delivered to the USAAF as C-54B-1-DC, c/n 10485, line # 216. The military serial was 42-72380 until 1946 when it was sold to American Airlines and registered as NC90417 and named Flagship Monterey. In 1949 the aircraft was sold to Iberia and for 15 years was registered as EC-AEP. In 1963 it was leased to Iberias subsidiary Aviaco. In 1964 EC-AEP was converted to the 16th ATL.98 Carvair and re-registered as EC-AXI on May 19, 1964. On February 1, 1969 it was leased to Dominicana who later bought it in May 1969 and registered it as HI-168 President Malon. It remained with Dominicana until June 23, 1969.
