The Challenger launched on her first voyage in 1983 completed the mission of first spacewalk of the Space Shuttle program and being the first satellite in the Tracking and Data Relay System constellation. As the first orbiter to launch and land at night on mission STS-8, the Challenger was the first to carry two U.S. female astronauts on mission STS 41-G and made the first Space Shuttle landing at Kennedy Space Center. After nine successful missions, the Challenger launched on STS-51L on January 28, 1986. 73 seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded. The loss of Challenger did not negate the work of NASA but encouraged it to continue to better mankind in space flight and in life on Earth.
