Capital Airlines Douglas DC-4 (1:200) by Hobby Master Diecast Airplanes
Item Number: HL2008
WWII in Europe had only ended a few months earlier when Overseas Airlines introduced the first commercial North Atlantic DC-4 service. Another first took place on March 7, 1946 when American Airlines introduced U.S. DC-4 domestic service between New York and Los Angeles. During the late 1940s and early 1950s the DC-4 and converted C-54s carried more passengers than any other four-engine transport. Amazingly many of these aircraft are still operating more than 60 years after they were first manufactured.
N91070 started out as an R5D-1 msn 7447 and was converted to DC-4 standards in October 1945 and delivered to Pennsylvania Central Air Lines (in 1948 became Capital Air Lines) in April 1946. The airline was the first commercial airline to fly the new DC-4. It operated in the Capital fleet as aircraft number 613 until 1961 when it was sold to United Air Lines who two months later sold it. The aircraft passed through a couple of other airlines eventually being scrapped in Wilmington Delaware. In 1948 Capital was the first airline to offer airborne television service. On July 1, 1961 Capital Air Lines merged with United so ending the Capital era.
