In 1966 the Navy established the Naval Flight Officer and this insignia. NFO's specializes in airborne weapons and sensor systems and are not pilots. Prior to 1966 this job was accomplished by enlisted and officer observers. NFOs are line officers, eligible for command in the naval aviation communities. This is a Mess Dress size wing in sterling silver with a 24k gold plate. It is very rare to find this wing in sterling. It is hallmarked W-32 and Sterling.
